Summer Slide...

I know some of you are going back to school already! Wow! I still have over a month of summer left.
I'm not bragging. I sit there in May when you all are talking about your summer days and we still have a month and a half of school left. :)
If you are still in summer mode, I have a graphic for the summer slide.

My friends over at NYE VW of Rome created this great graphic.
I am definitely going to share it with my parents and send it home in their report cards next year.

I hope you are enjoying your last days of summer.

Have a wonderful day!

True or False Practice

Do you find that your kiddos need more and more practice with True or False problems?
This is one of the hardest skills for my firsties to get.
I have worked with my firsties more on this skill this year and this is what helped them the most.

There are I can...statements for firsties to know what they are going to be learning about.
I know mine are always wanting to know. You can also send these home to the parents.
I wasn't positive about this, but then I got such a wonderful response that I am going to share these I can... statements on my newsletter.
Not all of them. :) I will have to pick and choose so not to overwhelm them. :)

This is part of the worksheet. I have my kiddos work down and make another number sentence or "equal" sentence. They find it easier to look at this instead of all the numbers.

With the True or False Sort, students take each equation and sort it into the True or False pile. After they sort it, they record it on the recording sheet. If it is false, they have to make it true.

I am excited to share this with you.
It has helped in my class so much!

Have a wonderful day!

Five for Friday

Happy Friday!
It's my last day of school! We had our last day with the kiddos yesterday and today we get to check out. Literally and Physically!

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday.
I just love this link. :)

We spent last weekend at my daughter's softball tournament. It was hot, hot, hot!
She played six games in two days! WOW!
Her team came in second place. They lost the last game by one run.

We are raising a service dog for Canine Companions for Independence. He is such a good puppy!
His name is Vader.
We will have him for 18 months and then give him up for intensive training.
We just love him!
Look at that face!

I got my hair cut!
10 inches lighter.

This is an amazing gift I got from one of my students!
I just LOVE IT!!!

Last night I rode my bike to yoga with this young lady!
We might try to run it next time.
FUN FUN FUN!

Bricks 4 Kidz

My colleague wrote a grant for Bricks 4 Kidz

Our guide introduced what we would be learning about today with a keynote slide show.
After learning about the Lunar Rover, the kiddos set out to build one of their own.

There was a "shopper" and a "builder" in the group.
One got the parts and another built the piece. Then they switched.

They were so engrossed in the project, they didn't even see me taking photos.
Usually I get one or two photobombs. :)

Their finished projects.

They got to make a "person" and take them home.

They had so much fun!
You should check it out if you have a chance.
We will be writing about their Lunar Rovers today! :)

I'm Back!

Holy Cow! I cannot believe it's been almost two months since I have posted.
So, here's what's going on...

I am training for a triathlon. I never thought I would do one. I know how much time goes into these. I know how much you have to work...or did I?
I have a set schedule, run and swim on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Saturdays. Bike on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
I am only training for the Olympic distance triathlon. How in the world do people train for an Ironman?

I am working on some projects and posts for the future.
This week softball ends and then we can finally get back into a regular routine.
I don't think we have sat down as a family to eat in two months.
Well, except for Sweet Frog. :)

I had a little Teacher Appreciation going on in the classroom.
Thank you to all for that! :)
I love notes and hugs!

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I love to be busy, but there is busy and then there is BUSY! Right now, I am winding down from BUSY! :)

I hope you all are having a wonderful almost end of the year. I have been keeping up with you a little. :)

Brain Breaks and GoNoodle Go Together Like Peanut Butter and Jelly

Who uses Brainbreaks or Energizers in their classroom? I can't imagine not having them in my first grade classroom.
My kiddos need them.

Sometimes I NEED them!

We use some activities from our Morning Meeting routine, but most of the time, we are using GoNoodle.

We also use it during inside recess. All of my firsties don't use it at this time, but it has been wonderful for those who have been using it.
We have monitors for our recess time. I have set up the SmartBoard so it is ready when they begin their indoor recess.

It gets them refocused and ready for our next task.

Some of our favorites are "Peanut Butter in a Cup", "Milkshake", and basically anything on Zumba Kids.

See how much Koo Koo Kangaroo inspires us!!!

Did you know they have their own FB page!!! Yep!!! I'm a stalker, I mean fan! :)

"When presented with new material, standards, and complicated topics, we need to be focused and calm as we approach our assignments. We can use brain breaks and focused-attention practices to positively impact our emotional states and learning. They refocus our neural circuitry with either stimulating or quieting practices that generate increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, where problem solving and emotional regulation occur."

Read this article from Edutopia. It has some simple ideas for Brain Breaks and why it is important.

What do you use for Brain Breaks? Share your favorite!

Morning Meeting Chants and Songs

I have been going through things in my classroom.
I still use charts so my firsties can physically work with it, but I also wanted them digitally for the SmartBoard.

We have Morning Meeting EVERY DAY. It doesn't matter if we have an assembly, delay, scheduled delay...whatever. We always have Morning Meeting. I honestly don't know how our day would go if we didn't have it. :)

Anyway, I have been putting our little chants and songs onto my computer. So, here are a few. Click on the picture to download them. They are all free. :)

Enjoy!
Happy Morning Meeting everyone!

Have a wonderful day!

Character Ed. Responsibility

We have a really great Character Education Program in our school.
In the past, the Character Education committee had done all the work for our assemblies and everything that goes with them.
This year, each grade level has to choose a trait and present at the opening and closing assemblies.
At first, our grade level was very nervous.
Then, of course, we started coming up with ideas and... that was that.

Our trait is Responsibility.

We will be showing an introduction video from The Magic School Bus series.

It's very cute and perfect for elementary school.

We are beginning a canned food drive for a local business.
This is going to be a long assembly. :)

The first graders also made up a song about Responsibility. We will be using some sign language with it. My firsties love signing.

Click on the picture above to download. :)

I'll let you know how the assembly goes. It's this Friday!

What do you do for Character Education?

Have a wonderful day!
