May Song Freebie

I am having so much fun with my family and one of my TAs making up these songs.
This one is a little tricky in the beginning.
Make sure you sing "Old MacDonald" before you sing the May Song.

Click on the picture to download from Google Docs.
I will upload it later to my TpT store.

I hope you enjoy it!
May Day tomorrow.
What are you doing to celebrate?
We are going to make flowers and put them on some unsuspecting teachers.

Planetarium Field Trip

We had such a good time at the Planetarium today. We went to the greenhouse, geology museum, and the  planetarium at Colgate College. Did I mention that it was FREE????

What a lovely day!
We went to the greenhouse and looked at all the plants. The leader told us about the most interesting plants and then the kiddos got to plant their own sunflower.
Then we went into the geology lab. The leader talked about all the interesting things there are in the museum. They have a REAL dinosaur EGG!!!! AWESOME!!!
They completed a scavenger hunt with a friend and then it was time for the main event.
We piled into the Vis Lab (planetarium). I actually had to sit on the floor. Which worked out well anyway. Two of my most precious firsties needed some extra "attention". :)
It was so cool!

What are your field trips? How many do you get a year?

Have a wonderful day!

Real or Alien Words FREEBIE

I had so much fun creating the Green Wilma: Frog in Space Unit, I wanted to share something else I created.
Real/Alien Word Sort

You can download it from Google Docs by clicking on the picture.
I can't upload it to my TpT store at school. I will do that at home later.

Are you blocked at school? What websites are blocked?
I find it interesting that I can get onto some sites and others are blocked. We had Scholastic blocked for a while. I understand for the students you have to have restrictions. We seem to be punished for a few people abusing the system. Oh Well. For the most part, I can email our IT person and get things unblocked.

I have some fun things planned for the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
Have a wonderful day!

An Interesting Start to the Week!

This is what I woke to this morning...

We got a two hour delay out of it.

Thank goodness we didn't have a snow day. We would have had to give up our Friday before Memorial Day. This was so unexpected!

It was my first day back teaching full time after my student teacher has had the class. It really gets the kids ALL messed up.
This was our schedule today:
Arrival
Soft Landing
Morning Meeting
Calendar
Get Ready for Lunch
"LUNCH??? We just ate breakfast!"
Lunch
Inside Recess YIPPEE!!! :(
Math
Phys. Ed.
Science (Beginning of Plant/Animal Unit) This was fun!!!
Snack
Read Aloud
Stack and Pack
Go Home

I do not like missing an entire day of Daily 5, Spelling, and Academy Time.

What do your schools do when you have a delay?

On a good note, I did enjoy just sitting by the fire with my coffee this morning for a couple extra minutes! :)
Have a wonderful day!

Back to Teaching

I have really enjoyed having my student teacher. She has grown so much! In the beginning she was so afraid to demand the student's attention when she was trying to give them directions. She is now so confident that she can gain their attention with an attention grabber and give them their directions without them interrupting her much. She has worked so hard on her lesson plans and getting everything ready to teach. I am going to miss her.
But...I am SO excited to get my classroom back.
I get to teach again tomorrow. It's like September all over again. That's how excited I am!

Happy Earth Day!

I wanted to leave you with this website to check out for TONS of ideas for Earth Day and beyond!

I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Have a wonderful day!

Furry Friends and a Freebie!

Sandy, over at, Soaring Through Second, is hosting a Linky Party and Giveaway!!!

Soaring Through Second

That's Yardley. He's always smiling. He was trained to be a companion dog. He got to the intense training and became too protective so we got him back. We love him so much!

This is Rosie. She LOVES to run and play. She "herds" the chickens. She was rescued from Kentucky. When we got her she was almost 5 weeks, about 5 pounds, and covered and filled with everything you can imagine. Since she can run 10 miles with me and then want to play fetch tells you that she turned out just fine.

They both have taught me that you have to have fun, you have to be loyal, and it doesn't matter how many times you try something, keep trying.

My Freebie is a fun dice game that we play constantly in our classroom. It gets them writing and using their math skills at the same time. This one is for number words.

I used Graphics From the Pond images.

Did you see it? Guest Blogger: Barb, from Grade ONEderful!

Wow!!!
Check out my blog makeover.
I am so happppppyyyyyy!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Barb, I LOVE it!!!

AND she is guest blogging today!!! Can this day get ANY better???

Welcome Barb...

Hi Everyone!

This is Barb from Grade ONEderful. Thank you so much to Beth Ann for inviting me to post on her blog.

I'd like to talk about those PESKY sight words. You know, the ones that the strugglers in our rooms always ~ well ~ struggle with.

I found a simple, yet very effective way to help everyone learn them. And it really works. It's only the beginning of April and already 13 of my 19 students can read (easily and quickly) all the Dolch words from Primer to Grade 3. That's about 220 words! Of the remaining six students, one of them is barely speaking English, one child has about 40 more to go, and the other four know more than 100 words!

Here's what I do ... it's nothing fancy, but I think it's the consistency that works. At the beginning of the year I assess everyone on their sight words. Then I choose six words for each child to study (these are individualized word lists). The words are sent home with instructions to the parents (and game ideas). You can grab a double-sided copy by clicking the image.

Every single Friday I have a trained volunteer come into my classroom and check the students on their weekly word list. She highlights the words they learned (in my assessment binder), finds another six words they need to master, and writes those new words on a list (see above) to be sent home to the parents.

Any words the child is unable to quickly read go back on the list to be studied for another week (but there are never more than six words at a time).

I've sent words home over the years but nothing has worked as well as this. I think it's because the parents are held more accountable and they see the results once a week when the new list goes home.

When the kids learn all their words, I fuss over them and present them with a little certificate. Their picture also goes in the classroom blog under "Reading Stars".  (And yes, even the last couple who don't manage to learn ALL the words, will still get fussed over and receive a certificate at the end of the year :))

(I don't make these certificates ... I buy them at the local teacher store :)

That's it! I hope this helps someone.
Have fun hunting for Easter eggs and thanks again, Beth Ann!!
